eBooks Petition
WHY CAN’T I FIND THE EBOOK I WANT?
If you look at our digital collection on Kentucky Libraries Unbound, you may be surprised that we don’t have the bestsellers and new books that are so popular in print available in digital format. We wish we could provide those titles to you in eBook form. However, publishers handle digital copies differently than print books. Out of 6 major publishing houses, only 2 or 3 will sell eBooks to libraries, so often we do not have the ability to provide the titles you want. There are many books that individual customers can purchase from, say, Amazon or Barnes & Noble that libraries just can’t. The American Library Association is talking with major publishers, but no positive changes have been made.
The Topeka & Shawnee County Library in Kansas has partnered with Library Renewal to start a petition for individuals to speak up and ask publishers to work with libraries. They have put together a great video! When they get to 10,000 responses, they will send the petition to the major publishers. If eBooks are something that interest you, we invite you take a look at this video and petition. There is also more information on what you can do under the “You Can Help” section of that site.
