Freegal FAQ

What is Freegal?

Freegal is a music service provided by the library to allow user to download DRM-free .mp3s of popular music. Using your card number and PIN, you have access to music from the Sony Music Entertainment catalog, including hundreds of thousands of songs

What's my PIN?

A PIN was provided when you originally signed up for your library card.  If you have forgotten your PIN, you will need to stop at the front desk of the library upon your next visit and we will set one for you.

My card number and PIN are not allowing me access. What should I do?

Check and make sure you are entering all 12 digits of your library card number, located above the barcode on your library card. If you are still having problems, please call the library at 502-352-2665 for assistance.

How many songs can I download?

Each account is allowed three downloads per week. When you log in to your Freegal account, a counter at the top of the page lists the number of downloads you have used for the current week. Each week begins at midnight on Sunday.

How do I download a song?

Click on the "Download Now" link next to the song you wish to download. Then, select "Save" and choose where to save the file on your computer.

All music files are in MP3 format and are yours to keep after you have downloaded them to your computer.

(Note: Any time you click on the "Download Now" link, even if you decide to cancel it, the download will count towards your weekly allotment.)

What are the different ways to search for a song or artist?

The Freegal site is set up to browse or to search. You can use the bar across the top to browse by genre or by suggestions. You can use the grid at the bottom right to browse by artist in alphabetical order. You can search by artist, song, album or keyword. Expanded search options are under "Advanced Search."
